"Seahorse, Pipefish and Stickleback" is now "Seahorse, Pipefish and Seadragon"

The IUCN SSC Seahorse, Pipefish and Stickleback Specialist Group (SPSSG) changed its name to the Seahorse, Pipefish and Seadragon Specialist Group.  This SG has always been focused on the speciose syngnathiform fishes (seahorses, pipefishes, seadragons and their near relatives) but also hitherto embraced the gastosteiformes (17 stickleback species and about 11 other species in three other families), solely because they were thought to be sister clades.  Phylogenetic revisions have, however, hugely expanded the distance between the two orders and there is no longer any justification for keeping them together.  The SPSSG will continue with responsibility for syngnathiform fishes totalling >320 species in five families.  Responsibility for the gasterosteiformes – which includes species found in freshwater and/or marine habitats – will be shared by the Freshwater Fish Specialist Group, the Freshwater Biodiversity Unit and the Marine Biodiversity Unit in order to complete the Red List assessments on these species.
